Let me tell you about my hair.
My hair is medium/long, and I recently colored it for the first time! (Just a natural balayage) I usually wash my hair 3-4 times a week, I let it air dry, and only use heat on my hair every few weeks, so it’s pretty healthy. But since I’ve had it colored I’ve noticed my hair has been drier, It has more split ends, it’s not nearly as soft as it was, and it just doesn’t have its usual healthy glow. Maybe it’s stress. Maybe it’s my diet. It’s probably because I had it done.
Or maybe, It’s the shampoo.
This “No-poo” movement has been all over the place recently. I kept coming across it when searching things for my hair. Benefits I’ve seen include a healthier scalp, less damage to your ends, and overall healthier and more moisturized hair! Now, that sounds great to me. So my question was, is not using Shampoo the answer to all my hair needs? I decided to put it to the test, and I gave up Shampoo for a month. Here’s what happened.
Okay, so let me just say how weird it feels to put a giant glob of conditioner on your scalp. That is not how I was taught to use conditioner! It felt goopy and very strange, and I had the hardest time getting it to move on my scalp. It was so dry somehow!? But it could be similar to changing shampoos, you don’t get the best lather the first few times. But we’ll see. As always, I let my hair air dry, and it dried about as wavy as it usually is.
Okay, second wash today. It took a lot less conditioner to get a good… is it called a lather if there aren’t any bubbles? Well, I had a good lather going. I decided to style my hair today as well, and I usually don’t. (I straightened it.) It felt pretty good, no complaints.
So today its felt a little itchy, but nothing crazy. It seems to be doing okay for Day 2 after washing hair. My hair tends to get very greasy on day 2-3 ESPECIALLY if I straighten it. The length of my hair feels pretty good to be honest; It’s pretty moisturized and soft. And I don’t think it looks really dirty, which was one of my biggest concerns starting this.
I washed my hair this morning, can I just say today and yesterday my hair did so well! It felt great, not itchy at all, but hey, it did look greasy.
My hair is taking longer to dry than normal… My roots feel kind of thick? I’m not sure how else to describe it. Not as light and knot-free as they were with Shampoo. I just don’t think it’s completely clean. Not sure what to think about it yet. But I suddenly want to shampoo my hair. Bad.
Halfway point! Today my hair feels great. I washed it last night, and it feels clean, refreshed, and moisturized.
Just noticed how shiny my hair is today! I haven’t been losing as much hair as I usually do either.
I really lathered on the conditioner today. I wanted my hair to be extra clean, because we’re going to a concert tonight. I will say my hair has been feeling so very very soft recently which is a nice change.
I’ve gotten so used to not using shampoo… It’s kind of funny! My hair has been feeling silky, soft, it’s been really nice.
I’m not sure how I feel about it overall. I did see some positive changes, especially when it came closer to the end of the month. But it does take much longer to wash your hair, and you use a TON of conditioner. I have started washing my hair with shampoo again…. Sort of. I mix it with conditioner, and it’s a very mild shampoo. The very first day of going back to Shampoo, I did I noticed a few things, my scalp felt very dry and itchy, and my hair dried very frizzy. (Which I didn’t really enjoy.) But the one thing I did like was that my hair looked very clean, and touching my scalp was so much easier!
My fingers kept getting all knotted up in my hair this past month, especially around the roots. I guess a part of my hair just never got really clean. I just had a hard time getting my hair to actually be clean with just conditioner! Of course I’m not an expert at this, so there’s room for user error. I think moving forward, I’m not going to give up shampoo. Though I think I will wash my hair with only conditioner every once in a while.
